1868AD, South Kensington, London. Construction work on the Metropolitan District Railway takes place.

The worlds first underground railway had opened in London in 1863AD and in the years after the first line was extended and over the years the system has and continues to expand. In the early years of construction the tunnels were built by digging up streets, building the tunnel and then cover it up, generally know as ‘cut and cover’.

This build was based on a photo by Henry Flather and was a part of my contribution to a collaborative build, by myself and the three other builders tagged. We displayed this together for the first time at STEAM and will be on show again at Brick2014

You can see all the photos at our Brick to the Past Flickr group Brick to the Past, or on our website: www.bricktothepast.com
