Bali Jatra ⁣Festival Debuts in the UK: A Tribute to Odisha’s Maritime Heritage

London, 30th November 2024 – ‍The illustrious ‌Bali Jatra festival, which honors the rich maritime history of Odisha,‍ was celebrated for its inaugural event in the United Kingdom at Townley Grammar School in Bexley. Organised by the ​Odisha Society of United Kingdom ​(OSUK), this landmark occasion attracted over 500 participants, including prominent figures from both UK and ⁢India ⁣such as ​dignitaries, cultural leaders, and community representatives. The event received support from⁤ Shree​ Jagannath​ Developer, Odisha Tourism, and Roptia ‍while‌ presenting a colorful display of Odia culture ​to an enthusiastic audience.

Ceremonial ​Opening: Boita Bandana

The festival commenced with ‌a symbolic ceremony known as Boita‌ Bandana, led by⁤ Dr. Bhargava Vasudevan—the Deputy Lieutenant of Gravesham—and Manoj Panda from⁢ the Indian High Commission. This ritual paid‌ homage to Odisha’s ancient ⁢trade connections with ⁢Southeast Asia through⁣ the floating of miniature boats adorned with lit‌ lamps—a​ poignant reminder of the region’s maritime legacy.
