Bali Jatra UK 2024: A Grand Homage to Odisha’s Nautical Tradition
On November 30, 2024, the renowned Bali Jatra festival, which pays tribute to the maritime history of Odisha, was observed for the inaugural time in the United Kingdom. Townley Grammar School in Bexley hosted this remarkable celebration under the aegis of the Odisha Society of United Kingdom (OSUK). The event attracted more than 500 participants, including esteemed dignitaries, cultural ambassadors, and influential community members from both India and Britain. With backing from Shree Jagannath Developer, Odisha Tourism, and Roptia, attendees were treated to a vivid display of Odia culture.
Significant Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony commenced with Boita Bandana—an age-old tradition led by Dr. Bhargava Vasudevan, Deputy Lieutenant of Gravesham alongside Manoj Panda from the Indian High Commission. This ritual featured miniature boats adorned with illuminated lamps as a heartfelt homage to Odisha’s historic trading engagements across Southeast Asia.
Cultural Celebrations Abound
The festivities launched ceremonially with performances of both Indian and British national anthems followed by “Bande Utkala Janani,” performed superbly by women from the Odia diaspora under vocalist Sonali Pattnaik’s direction. Noteworthy performances included a captivating Mangala Charana presented by renowned Odissi artist Aviroop Sengupta alongside his pupil Adwiti Tripathy Pattnayak, while yoga instructor Sitanshu Sahu conducted a session that emphasized mental wellness.
Highlighting Maritime Influence on Modern India
Sweta Mohanty representing OSUK stressed how significant Odisha’s ancient maritime background is today amid India’s strategic push for maritime growth through initiatives like its stitched ship project. Director Partha Sarathi Panda underscored their vision: fostering global acknowledgment for Odisha’s rich heritage while strengthening cultural and commercial interactions abroad.
