Celebrating Odisha’s Maritime Heritage: The Inaugural Bali Jatra Festival in the UK
London, November 30, 2024 – The traditional Bali Jatra festival, honoring the rich maritime history of Odisha, marked its debut in the United Kingdom at Townley Grammar School in Bexley. Organized by the Odisha Society of United Kingdom (OSUK), this momentous occasion attracted more than 500 participants, including prominent figures from both Indian and British communities. Supported by Shree Jagannath Developer, Odisha Tourism, and Roptia, this event highlighted Odisha’s dynamic cultural legacy to a diverse audience.
Ceremonial Commencement
The opening ceremony featured a symbolic Boita Bandana led by Dr. Bhargava Vasudevan, Deputy Lieutenant of Gravesham, alongside Manoj Panda from the Indian High Commission. This ritual involved floating miniature boats illuminated with lamps as an homage to Odisha’s ancient trade relations with Southeast Asia.

The festivities commenced with the national anthems of India and Great Britain followed by Banda Utkala Janani—Odisha’s state anthem—performed by women from the Odia community under singer Sonali Pattnaik’s direction.
