Celebrating Odisha’s Maritime Heritage: The Inaugural Bali Jatra Festival in the UK
London, November 30, 2024 – The inaugural Bali Jatra festival highlighting Odisha’s rich maritime traditions took place at Townley Grammar School in Bexley, marking a significant cultural milestone for the Odia community in the UK. Organized by the Odisha Society of United Kingdom (OSUK), this notable event attracted over 500 attendees, including dignitaries and esteemed figures from both the UK and India. With the backing of Shree Jagannath Developer, Odisha Tourism, and Roptia, attendees were immersed in Odisha’s vibrant cultural tapestry.
Inaugural Ceremony: A Floating Tribute
The festival commenced with a symbolic Boita Bandana ceremony officiated by Dr. Bhargava Vasudevan, Deputy Lieutenant of Gravesham, alongside Manoj Panda from the Indian High Commission. This ritual paid homage to Indonesia’s ancient trading routes with Southeast Asia through stunning miniature boats adorned with lights that floated on water as a tribute to maritime heritage.
Cultural Showcase: A Fusion of Traditions
The festivities began with performances of both national anthems from India and Britain followed by ‘Bande Utkala Janani’, Odisha’s state anthem sung passionately by women from the Odia diaspora under singer Sonali Pattnaik’s direction. An enchanting display featuring Mangala Charana was performed by renowned Odissi artist Aviroop Sengupta alongside his student Adwiti Tripathy Pattnayak. Additionally, yoga instructor Sitanshu Sahu captivated participants with a session focused on wellbeing.
