Having held the position of Canada’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom since 2021, Goodale has a privileged perspective from which to observe both the dynamic landscape of London and broader global matters impacting Canadian interests. Ralph Goodale: The term “high commissioner” is quite distinctive within international diplomacy; it functions identically to “ambassador.” A major component is representation—being active in various aspects—but above all else, my primary responsibility is ensuring that Canada’s perspectives are communicated during every significant interaction and event where Canadian interests are involved.
The team I lead consists almost entirely close to 300 personnel; this makes our mission in London one of Canada’s largest abroad—after Washington D.C., naturally. We tackle an array of issues spanning political relations, national defense strategies, trade activities, cultural events—and also assist Canadians traveling overseas who may encounter difficulties such as lost passports or accidents. Our mission embodies advocacy for Canadian interests throughout the UK.
This role requires frequent attendance at meetings where it’s crucial for us to voice Canada’s viewpoints diligently so that these interests receive robust representation across Britain.

Over recent years since my appointment began, I’ve encountered numerous unpredictable events—wars erupting first in Ukraine followed by conflict escalation elsewhere just requires constant adaptability. Each agenda can be transformed by unforeseen circumstances on any particular day—from esteemed dinners hosted at Mansion House or receptions happening at Guildhall—to monumental gatherings occurring within Buckingham Palace or St. James Palace featuring royal attendees or another kind altogether without those present expected!

For a foreign diplomat, round-the-clock security is essential. In urgent situations, protection must be readily accessible. When people from the UK learn I’m Canadian, their response is overwhelmingly positive. Often they hear my accent and mistake it for an American one. I patiently clarify that I’m from Canada, and their demeanor shifts immediately—there’s an evident affection associated with Canada. This warmth may stem from our long-standing relationship as part of the Commonwealth and our historical ties; many connections run deep within families from generations ago which still resonate today.

The Curiosity About Saskatchewan
People often express fascination when they discover I’m specifically from Saskatchewan—they ask about our extreme winter temperatures: “Is it true it gets down to minus 40?” Indeed! It happens for several days each winter! Moreover, there’s notable interest regarding Indigenous traditions in the province along with current discussions surrounding reconciliation efforts.
Saskatchewan is known as Canada’s agricultural hub; we yield some of the finest produce globally—a fact many are proud to know! The expansive landscapes evoke admiration too, coupled with stories about family links to historical aviation training programs like the Commonwealth Air Training Program—it’s common for someone here to mention having relatives who trained nearby.
