LONDON (AP) — The United Kingdom experienced significant flooding on Wednesday as relentless rain and strong winds severely impacted New Year’s celebrations.
Flooding in Manchester Area
A number of neighborhoods in the Manchester region were inundated, resulting in the evacuation of numerous homes. Vehicles were submerged up to their roofs both on roadways and within parking areas after approximately a month’s worth of rain fell within just 48 hours.
Authorities declared a major incident, deploying mountain rescue teams to assist firefighters manage flooded properties and assist stranded motorists, according to Greater Manchester Police.

Meteorologist Tom Morgan from the Met Office projected that flooding was likely to persist throughout the day. “The situation could deteriorate before it improves,” he warned.
Didsbury resident Tom Coulthard reported that heavy rainfall began late Tuesday afternoon and continued through the night, causing rivers to overflow and prompting hotel evacuations by dawn. Local roads and highways were left inaccessible due to severe conditions.
