LONDON (AP) — Heavy rainfall and strong winds wreaked havoc on New Year’s celebrations throughout various regions of the United Kingdom on Wednesday, leading to significant flooding.

The Manchester area witnessed considerable flooding, resulting in the evacuation of dozens of residences. Many vehicles were completely submerged in water both on roadways and within parking lots following an intense downpour that released nearly a month’s worth of rain within just two days.
In response to these dire conditions, authorities declared a major incident. Mountain rescue teams were deployed alongside firefighters to assist with swamped homes and stranded cars, according to Greater Manchester Police.

“We are likely to experience additional flooding throughout the day,” warned Tom Morgan, a meteorologist from the Met Office. “The anticipated flood situation could become more severe before improvement is visible.”

Tom Coulthard recounted how relentless rainfall began late Tuesday afternoon and continued into the night in his Didsbury neighborhood south of Manchester. This resulted in overflowing riverbanks and necessitated evacuations at nearby hotels before dawn broke. The heavy rains also led to closures on several local roads and highways.
Coulthard, a geography professor at the University of Hull, remarked: “All nearby rivers have risen dramatically, inundating neighborhoods. This serves as a stark indication of our shifting climate patterns.”

The torrential rain disrupted New Year’s Eve festivities across numerous cities including Edinburgh where fireworks displays were canceled due to bad weather conditions. Planned events for New Year’s Day such as brisk outdoor swims and bathtub sailing competitions also faced cancellation.
London’s Celebrations Face Adjustments
Whereas London managed to proceed with its grand fireworks display along the River Thames near Big Ben, it had to delay its traditional New Year’s Day parade due to inclement weather that grounded inflatable floats.
Dancers and band members traversing through central London resorted to wrapping transparent coverings over their colorful attire for protection against persistent showers.

The UK meteorological service issued flood warnings affecting over 150 communities nationwide—primarily concentrated in northern England—though many warnings had been rescinded by later in the day as conditions evolved.
The adverse weather resulted in multiple train cancellations owing to waterlogged tracks while several highways fell victim to closures prompted by rising waters.
