LONDON (TNND) — A recent self-guided exploration at the U.K.’s Science Museum has sparked debate by alleging that the widely adored building toy Lego perpetuates “heteronormativity.”
A Closer Look at ‘Seeing Things Queerly’
This accusation arises from a section of the museum’s tour, titled “Seeing Things Queerly,” which encourages visitors to explore exhibits that showcase narratives of queer identities, communities, and experiences. Among various artifacts displayed—from aircraft models to replicas of fowls—the critique aimed at Lego stands out as particularly controversial.
Gendered Language and Its Implications
The museum’s online description illustrates its point by stating, “Similar to other connectors and fasteners, Lego bricks frequently receive gender-specific terminology.” According to their analysis, “The pegs on top of the brick symbolize masculinity while the corresponding holes beneath are labeled as feminine; this assembling process is termed ‘mating.’” This language raises questions about how societal norms surrounding gender are entwined with even inanimate objects.
Moreover, it adds that this phenomenon depicts an instance where heteronormative language infiltrates discussions unrelated to sexuality or reproduction. It aims to highlight how such a viewpoint—where heterosexuality and traditional male-female roles are viewed as standard—is pervasive in our discourse about science and technology.
Lack of Supporting Evidence
Interestingly, no sources were cited by the Science Museum backing their claims regarding Lego. Conversely, an explanation from Lego itself describes its product functionality using distinctly different phrasing. On their website, they state: “The tubes located on each brick’s base interlock seamlessly with the knobs atop other bricks. The knobs fit snugly between these tubes in a manner that ensures stability.” This disparity suggests varying interpretations regarding how these toys should be discussed.
Reactions on Social Media
The allegations have ignited considerable discussion across social media platforms. Prominent figures like Elon Musk reacted humorously; he posted a clown emoji in response to one comment addressing these claims. Political commentator Ben Shapiro remarked sarcastically about human biology being subject to scrutiny as well: “Wait until they discover that humans possess male and female anatomy designed for reproduction,” he quipped.
Attorney Jenin Younes chimed in too—“In light of everything happening globally right now,” she expressed her need for humor during such times adding emphatically that this particular incident provided her with some much-needed levity today.
