The discussions surrounding the establishment of a Universal Studios theme park in the United Kingdom are currently in progress, as confirmed by government officials.

Universal, headquartered ‌in the‌ US, has acquired a ⁢substantial 700-acre parcel in Kempston, Hardwick, ⁤Bedfordshire. The ambition is to create Europe’s largest theme park alongside a hotel boasting 500 rooms. ⁤

After Chancellor Rachel Reeves delivered remarks on January 29 emphasizing infrastructure initiatives and economic development, Blake Stephenson, Conservative MP for Mid‍ Bedfordshire, addressed Parliament expressing that his constituents would likely⁢ be “astonished if the government ‍were not supportive of Universal Studios.”

He followed up by asking: “Could the minister elucidate when he plans‌ to finalize discussions with Universal Studios and provide an⁣ update to Parliament?”

Treasury⁤ Minister Darren Jones replied: “Regrettably, ⁢I cannot provide an exact timeline as these matters are inherently negotiable. Discussions are still ongoing; however, I am optimistic we will offer updates⁣ soon‍ demonstrating our ability ‌to secure agreements more expediently than his party managed‍ during their tenure.”

Labour MP Mohammad Yasin from Bedfordshire and Kempston also requested assurance regarding advancements on this project. Mr. Jones reiterated: “The government is engaged in talks with stakeholders about this‌ initiative; alas I cannot disclose details at this moment but look forward to giving comprehensive updates as⁣ they become available.”

The potential theme park’s future remains uncertain until Universal Destinations and Experiences issues a confirmation; however, projections indicate it could generate approximately 8,000 jobs locally once operational—with⁢ job numbers potentially increasing to around 10,000 over two⁤ decades.

Additionally, it is anticipated⁢ that this development would ‌support various improvements in local transport infrastructure including ‌new railway stations and enhancements along ⁢Manor Road alongside new access routes from A421 contingent upon moving forward with ‍the project.

An⁢ economic impact report released by ⁣Universal claims adherence to HM Treasury ⁣guidelines on economic analysis suggests that “the expected net⁢ economic contribution of this venture for the UK is estimated at £35.1 billion throughout both its construction phase and initial twenty years of operation.”

Globally renowned for its entertainment offerings, Universal operates five major resort complexes which include destinations like Universal Orlando Resort and Hollywood Studio Parks in America ‍along with resorts located in Japan (Osaka), China (Beijing), and Singapore.

This proposed resort boasts convenient transport links such as proximity to London Luton Airport which‍ provides easy access ⁢under⁣ an hour away from central London.

The resort ⁢holds promise for attracting millions of international tourists heading into the UK annually.

A spokesperson representing Universal Destinations stated: ”We continue engaging constructively with UK ‌officials regarding our plans while aiming to share further information at an ⁢appropriate time.”
