Londoner stone

\"Londoner

This marble plaque in the Museum of London (www.museumoflondon.org.uk/museum-london/permanent-galleri…), unearthed in Southwark in 2002, identifies its donor as being "moritix Londiniensium". We don’t know what a moritix is, possibly some kind of official or officially recognized provisioner, but Londiniensium is the genitive of what must be Londinienses, meaning Londoners, the first time that the people of London are known to have been referred to as such. The plaque is thought to date from the late second century AD (see: discovery.ucl.ac.uk/id/eprint/114233/1/moritexBES.pdf).
