London, 30th November 2024 – The illustrious Bali Jatra festival, which honors the rich maritime history of Odisha, was celebrated for its inaugural event in the United Kingdom at Townley Grammar School in Bexley. The event received support from Shree Jagannath Developer, Odisha Tourism, and Roptia while presenting a colorful display of Odia culture to an enthusiastic audience.
Ceremonial Opening: Boita Bandana
The festival commenced with a symbolic ceremony known as Boita Bandana, led by Dr. Bhargava Vasudevan—the Deputy Lieutenant of Gravesham—and Manoj Panda from the Indian High Commission. This ritual paid homage to Odisha’s ancient trade connections with Southeast Asia through the floating of miniature boats adorned with lit lamps—a poignant reminder of the region’s maritime legacy.
A Celebration of Culture
The festivities kicked off with stirring performances that included renditions of both Indian and British national anthems before moving on to Bande Utkala Janani—Odisha’s state anthem—performed by women from the Odia diaspora under the direction of singer Sonali Pattnaik. A captivating Mangala Charana dance presented by esteemed Odissi artist Aviroop Sengupta along with his pupil Adwiti Tripathy Pattnayak set an inspiring tone for these celebrations. Attendees were further engaged through a mental health advocacy session led by yoga instructor Sitanshu Sahu.
