Design Competition for a National Memorial Honoring Queen Elizabeth II
To commemorate the remarkable reign of the United Kingdom’s longest-serving monarch, the British government has initiated a design competition aimed at creating a national memorial dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II.
Collaborative Effort by Experts
The Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee is partnering with Malcolm Reading Consultants to assemble a diverse team of professionals, including artists, architects, engineers, and landscape specialists. They are seeking individuals willing to participate in this significant artistic endeavor. Importantly, the selected team must include an architect registered in the UK.
Phased Submission Process
The first phase of this competition invites interested parties to submit an expression of interest online. During this initial stage, no design concepts are required; rather, applicants should provide information regarding their team’s structure and qualifications. The second stage will feature a ten-week design period for five shortlisted teams.

Lord Janvrin, chair of the committee and former private secretary to Queen Elizabeth II, expressed that finalists will face the challenge of capturing her exceptional contributions to national life through innovative designs that respect the memorial’s unique setting.
An Ideal Location: St James’s Park
The chosen site for the memorial will reside within St James’s Park in London—the oldest Royal Park in England—situated near Buckingham Palace. The competition guidelines outline key elements such as constructing a new bridge over the park’s lake while incorporating opportunities for artistic features and enhanced landscaping.

Chancellor Pat McFadden emphasized that this monument would serve as an enduring homage to Queen Elizabeth’s legacy, providing both contemplative space and opportunities for celebration. He urged top architects and designers to present their visions on how best to realize this important project.
Timeline for Announcements
The shortlisted candidates are anticipated to be revealed in spring 2025 in the UK, with winners expected by early summer 2025. The final concept is set for disclosure during what would have been Her Majesty’s centenary year in 2026.
