Trinidad and Tobago Expresses Regret Over UK Visa Restrictions
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – The government of Trinidad and Tobago has publicly conveyed its discontent regarding the recent decision by the United Kingdom to impose visa requirements on citizens of the oil-rich twin island nation, effective immediately.
Concerns from Government Officials
Dr. Amery Browne, the CARICOM and Foreign Affairs Minister, shared his sentiments during a local radio broadcast. He suggested that Port of Spain felt somewhat taken aback by London’s announcement, despite acknowledging that a brief 48-hour notice was provided prior to the public disclosure of this policy change.
“We received just two days’ notice. On Monday, we were informed by the UK government about their new visa regime starting Wednesday,” Dr. Browne explained to his audience.
“While we did get some indication beforehand, such short notice is hardly adequate when dealing with our longstanding partners in matters of such significance. Their resolution had clearly been settled before our notification,” he added.
The Impact on Citizens
Browne elaborated that aside from familial ties, many nationals from Trinidad and Tobago travel to the UK for medical treatment or education purposes. “London serves as a crucial transit hub for our citizens aiming for further travel or those heading into Europe,” he stated.
According to announcements from London, all nationals from Trinidad and Tobago will now require a visa for entry into or transit through the UK—this includes both short visits and longer stays for work or study purposes.
A Transition Period Outlined
The British government has outlined a six-week transition phase allowing travelers who secured their electronic travel authorizations (ETAs) before these changes were enacted an opportunity to enter without additional visa requirements until 15:00 on April 23, 2025. This period also applies to individuals transiting through the UK en route elsewhere.
Reasons Behind New Policy
The British High Commissioner in Trinidad and Tobago, John Dean, highlighted that revising immigration and visa regulations is standard practice for maintaining efficiency within systems. “Recently there has been a notable rise in questionable asylum applications made by citizens of Trinidad and Tobago at our borders,” Dean commented. “Because of actions taken by a minority group concerning asylum claims we’ve had no choice but to implement this new requirement.”
Alarming Statistics on Asylum Applications
A report released by the British Home Office indicated an astonishing ninefold surge in asylum requests originating from Caribbean nations—increasing yearly averages from just 49 claims between 2015-2019 up to 348 reported cases last year alone with significant totals reaching as high as 439 in recent months. An escalated pattern which severely impacts bilateral relations between both nations.
A Diplomatic Response Planned
Browne announced plans for an imminent meeting with Dean “to formally express opposition against this imposed visa necessity.” He remarked on how unusual it is that specific rationale behind their decision was promptly communicated rather than left open-ended.
“The reasons they cited include surging asylum applications—and while we respect communicative efforts around it; we fundamentally disagree with using this instance as justification affecting potentially every citizen,” he stressed.”..
