PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – On Friday, the government of Trinidad and Tobago expressed its dissatisfaction regarding the United Kingdom’s urgent introduction of visa requirements for its citizens. This change is effective immediately for travelers from the petroleum-rich twin-island nation.
Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign Affairs and CARICOM Affairs, indicated during a local radio broadcast that Trinidad and Tobago was taken aback by this development. He recognized that while the UK had provided a brief notice—only 48 hours—before making this announcement public, it was still inadequate for addressing such a significant matter.
“We received notification just two days ago. On Monday, our counterparts in the UK informed us via correspondence about their decision to impose visa regulations starting Wednesday,” Browne explained to listeners.
“While we did receive some advance warning, two days is hardly sufficient time—especially among allies—to address an issue of such magnitude. It appears their decision was already firm and merely communicated to us under these circumstances,” he continued.
Browne emphasized the long-standing relationship between Trinidad and Tobago and the United Kingdom, pointing out their shared history has fostered strong connections within their diaspora over many years.
He highlighted additional considerations: “Beyond family members affected by this policy shift are students pursuing education in British institutions as well as individuals with medical needs who frequently travel there. Moreover, London serves as a crucial hub for many Trinidadians continuing on to other destinations or within Europe.”
The UK’s announcement specified that citizens from Trinidad and Tobago will now require visas not only for visiting but also for transiting through the UK—even on short trips—as well as moving there for employment or educational purposes.
The transition period will last six weeks until 15:00 on April 23rd, 2025; visitors who made travel arrangements before these changes took effect can still enter Britain without a visa if they have obtained an electronic travel authorization (ETA). This allowance extends to passengers passing through Britain en route to other destinations.
British High Commissioner John Dean noted that periodic reviews of immigration policies are standard practice aimed at maintaining efficacy in controlling entry into Britain. He elaborated that recent reports indicate a substantial surge in unfounded asylum applications from nationals of Trinidad and Tobago at UK borders—a situation driven by actions of an unrepresentative minority prompting this tough decision from British officials.
